Description

Black and white photo of Julius Stratton, Mrs. Bitter, Howard Johnson, and Benjamin Lax. Original caption: "From the Office of Public Relations, For Immediate Release. The 10 million-watt motor-generated sets which supply power for the world's most powerful magnet provided the backdrop today for the ceremony in which the National Magnet Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was renamed in honor of Dr. Francis Bitter, who died last July. Dr. Bitter was one of the world's great authorities on magnetism and the Laboratory represented the culmination of his work on powerful magnetic fields. Shown with Mrs. Bitter are Dr. Julius Stratton, Chairman of the Ford Foundation and former President of M.I.T.; Howard W. Johnson, President of M.I.T.; and professor Benjamin Lax, Director of the Laboratory."
