Original caption: "Just back from the cold world of absolute zero, this rod has on its end 40 cryotrons, tiny wire devices which may substitute for vacuum tubes in electronic comptuers. Cryotrons are the first useful application of a phenomenon known only at temperatures below minus 420° Farenheit. Dudley Buck, a gradauate student and instructor in electrical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, shown here in his laboratory, began cryotron development three years ago.
