Original Caption: "Professor John Chipman, head of the M.I.T. metallurgy department and David B. Smith, graduate student in the department, discuss research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to investigate the chemical reactions which take place in steel furnaces. Studies on equipment such as this, which was designed and built at M.I.T. to duplicate with a high degree of accuracy the chemical reactions in even the largest steel furnaces, have provided an understanding of the chemical reactions which control the sulphur content of steel. The studies are expected to result in better methods of control which will make possible the use of lower grades of coke in manufacturing even the highest grades of steel."
