Description
The Edison Memorial Tower stands at the original site of Thomas Edison's laboratory. The tower is made of pale concrete and is topped with a large light bulb-shaped sculpture made of glass. Original caption: "Edison Tower of Light. The new Edison tower of light at Menlo Park, N.J., stands on the exact spot where Thomas Edison invented the incandescent lamp more than 50 years ago. Completed this month, the 130-foot, $100,000 tower is surmounted with a light bulb 14 feet high of 5200 watts. William Slocum Barstow, president of Edison Pioneers, organization of Edison employes [sic], provided funds for the tower which has in its base a perpetual light illuminated first in 1929 and fed by both power lines and batteries to assure continuous light.
