Description

Margaret H. Hamilton smiles as she flips a switch in a mock up of an Apollo 12 command module. Original caption: "Margaret Hamilton of Cambridge, Mass., mathematician and computer programmer at the M.I.T. Instrumentation Laboratory, raises an M.I.T. pennant atop a mock up of the Apollo 12 comand module symbolizing a perfect flight to the moon and back. Instrumentation Laboratory developed this guidance for the command module, Yankee Clipper, and the lunar module, Intrepid, and programmed the on-board computers for each space craft. Miss Hamilton headed the group in charge of programming the computers, including the recoding of one part of the Intrepid's program that helped make possible the pinpoint landing in the Sea of Storms."
