The students were the student managers of Project Ares, a group focused on building this spacecraft model. Original caption: "Spaceship for Mars Student managers of Project Ares are (left) John Holdren, 21, of (416 Terrace Way) San Mateo, Calif., a senior in aeronautics and astronautics, and (right) Brian Hollenbeck, 22, of (53 East Shore Dr.) Babylon, N.Y., an aeronautics and astronautics graduate student. They headed a group of students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in developing a full-scale plan for sending a manned mission to Mars in 1984.
