Gordon P. Garmire adjusts a model of the Explorer XI satellite, which is used to study intra-galactic gamma rays.

Original caption: "From the Office of Public Relations, Massachusetts Institute of Technology Cambridge 39, Massachusetts, UN 4-6900, etx. 2705 // Dr. Gordon Garmire, a member of the research staff at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Laboratory for Nuclear Science prepares a model of the Explorer XI satellite for exhibit at the New England Regional Conference on Science, Technology and Space at M.I.T. Nov. 13-14. LNS scientists designed and built the satellite which was launched into earth orbit April 27, 1961, to study intra - galactic gamma rays. The model is one of several examples of space age equipment that will be exhibited at the conference being sponsored by M.I.T. and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to give New England leaders a better understanding of the national space program and the contributions this region can make to the program."
