Description

Byron Baker Woertz kneels down to adjust a dial in the solar research laboratory.

Original caption: "The new sun laboratory, recently completed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for research on the utilization of solar radiation for house heating and power generation. Dr. Byron B. Woertz, research associate in connection with the project, is inspecting the energy collectors of 'heat traps', in which circulating water is heated by sunlight for storage in a large tank in the basement for future use. The walls of the building, as well as the tank, are well insulated to reduce the loss of heat. In the upper left corner of the roof is a pyrheliometer (cover removed), an instrument for recording the intensity of sunlight throughout the day. From John J. Rowlands Director of News Service Mass. Institute of Technology Cambridge, Mass."
