Original caption: "Dr. James R. Killian Jr., president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, prepares to guide the shovel making the first excavation for the new Sloan Metal Processing Laboratory building, construction on which began this week at M.I.T. With him, left to right, are Professor John Chipman, head of the department of metallurgy; Professor John Wulff, director of the metal processing laboratory; Robert C. Dean of the Boston firm of Perry, [illegible] architect for the new building; and [illegible] James Holt, executive officer in the department in mechanical engineering. When completed in the fall of 1951, the [illegible] building will house the Institute's pioneering program of education and research in metallurgical sciences as applied to basic manufacturing processes."
