Briggs, Luther
Maker
When Luther Briggs built the coasting sloop Mayflower in 1823, this model was likely his only design source. By carving a scale model, Briggs (or one of his fellow shipbuilders in Pembroke, Massachusetts) could clearly and easily show the shape of his proposed ship. Briggs then scaled up measurements from the model to make full-size patterns for his ship timbers. Specifications for masts, sails, planks, and other elements were filled in by Pembroke’s experienced shipwrights.
