Colonial Bark

Contact us about this object

Description

Fully rigged model of an early seventeenth-century English bark. Round stern, bluff bow, and two masts with square sails, the foremast stepped almost at the stempost. Brown above the waterline and white below. Mounted on a flat wooden base.

This model was based on William A. Baker's reconstruction of the small ships, like the pinnace Virginia or Sparrow Hawk, commonly used by English colonists in North America. About 37 feet long, these were some of the smallest English vessels capable of crossing oceans. They proved capable of working in American coastal waters and were popular as fishing vessels.
