Description

Waterline model of the oil tanker Narragansett, which was built for the Anglo-American Oil Company in 1903. The model shows a vessel with a plumb bow, a long, straight midsection and square stern. A small bridge and deckhouse are built around the smokestack amidships. Many small ventilators protrude through the deck. Five small riding sails are set.

When the 512' long Narragansett was launched, she was by far the largest bulk oil tanker in the world. Built in Glasgow, the ship included several innovative design elements, including a hull subdivided into tanks with multiple oil-tight bulkheads and fire suppression systems. The Narragansett carried oil from America to England until it was sunk during World War I.
