Contact us about this object

Description

The steamer Excalibur was a Windsor-class attack transport built for World War II by Bethlehem Steel's Sparrows Point Shipyard. When launched in 1944, the ship was named Dutchess, with the official number APA-98. At the end of the war, the Dutchess was decommissioned, sold to the American Export Lines, and renamed Excalibur.

This waterline model shows the Dutchess, renamed Excalibur, as operated by the American Export Lines. All evidence of wartime use has been removed, leaving a smart black hull with white superstructure, dominated by multiple buff cargo booms and winches. The smokestack has the American Export Lines' mark of a blue 'E' on a white ground with red stripes above and below. Mounted on a blue wooden base with descriptive labels.
