In 1873, Adolph Coors opened the Adolph Coors Brewing Company in Golden, Colorado. The company built its own glassworks, the Coors Binder & Co. to manufacture bottles for the brewery. The space was leased to John Herold in 1910, who also began to make heat-resistant porcelain in the space. In 1914, Herold's company was acquired by the Adolph Coors Brewing Company. During WWI, the company began to manufacture porcelain for chemical lab ware because of the shortage caused by the embargo on goods from Germany (which had been the main manufacturer of laboratory equipment up to that point). The company was renamed Coors Porcelain in 1920, and renamed again to Coors Ceramics Company in 1986. In 1989, the Adolph Coors Brewing Company became a holding company, and the Coors Ceramics Company was split from its brewing company parent. In 2000, Coors Ceramics became a publicly traded company under the name CoorsTek, Inc.
