Charles E. Smith Residential Open Space
2023.029.1166
“This proposed planned development transformed a 5.7-acre industrial site into a lively urban residential enclave at the eastern gateway to Cambridge. The high-rise buildings with adjacent townhouses, designed by ADD, Inc., have taken their place in the City skyline. The buildings' landscape, envisioned by Carr, Lynch and Sandell, provided open space, amenity and recreation opportunities for residents and the public. The proposed park featured an outdoor café, water fountain, sitting areas and lush plantings bordering a central lawn. The entry terrace featured a formal parterre, allee and, beyond that, a fanciful playground. Most distinctive, perhaps, is the enclave’s frontage along Msgr. O’Brien Highway, under an existing elevated train trestle. A promenade for pedestrians and bicyclists was created, animated by changing spatial sequences, woodland plantings and trellis structures.”
