Contact us about this object

Description

This speaker consists of two double-convex paper cones supported by a circular metal backing piece. The speaker is supported by a metal stand.

This type of loudspeaker was developed in 1922 by N.H. Ricker of Bell Labs, and was manufactured by Western Electric as the model 540-AW starting in 1924, making it one of the earliest paper cone loudspeakers ever developed. Like other loudspeakers, it transducer electrical signals into sound, but it did so without the large horn that earlier speakers relied on for amplification.
