Description

Monochrome engraving depicting men in a small, single-sailed boat firing at a large, serpent-like sea monster, whose tail resembles a partially submerged corkscrew. In the background is a large three-masted ship and a mountainous landmass. The image is labeled "Plate 29" in the top right and "The Great Sea Serpent (According to Pontoppidon)" at bottom center.

This print is part of a series illustrating Robert Hamilton's "The Natural History of the Amphibious Carnivora, including the Walrus and Seals, also of the Herbivorous Cetacea, &c." (Edinburgh, W.H. Lizars, 1839)
