Description

Monochrome image depicting a squidlike animal attacking a ship from the right. One of its tentacles is wrapped about a mast, and another is engaged in tearing down the sail of a mast that has already split in two. Two more tentacles stretch over the sides of the ships; sailors with hatchets are attacking them. On the left, men flee into lifeboats. In the background is another three-masted ship and a pair of icebergs. The image is labeled at top right, "Plate 30" and at bottom centre, "THE KRAKEN SUPPOSED A SEPIA OR CUTTLE FISH (from Denys Montford)".
