Description

Close-up on the display case from GCP-00004651. This section of the display focuses on Lewis Fry Richardson. The largest section of text, under a photograph of Richardson and his wife Dorothy, reads: "Richardson rejected the possibility of ever predicting weather accurately on the basis of previous weather conditions. Instead, he turned to a numerical model in which equations simulated the physical system. He knew the difficulties. 'Perhaps some day in the dim future,' he wrote, 'it will be possible to advance the computations faster than the weather advances and at a cost less than the saving to mankind due to the information gained. But that is a dream.'" This section is surrounded by several more photographs, drawings, and books, as well as a slide rule used by Richardson, all with short captions.
