Description

Benjamin Lax and Francis Bitter sit behind a desk together. Bitter points out something in the binder in front of him. Original caption: "Dr. Benjamin Lax, left (25 Audubon Drive) Chestnut Hill, and Dr. Francis Bitter, (10 Cumberland Street) Belmont, are two scientists who will be concerned with the national research facility to be known as the M.I.T. Magnet Laboratory. Dr. Lax, head of the division of solid state physics at the Lincoln Laboratory, will be director of the new laboratory, and Dr. Bitter, who has been associate dean of the School of Science at M.I.T. will assume primary responsibility for the design and construction of the new facility. M.I.T. Magnet Laboratory will be constructed and maintained under a contract with the Air Research and Development Command, USAF.
