Sound Scriber
Maker
An instrument housed in a wooden box covered with a dark brown synthetic leather-like cover. The front of the box has a knob on the right side and a circular hole covered with fabric on the left side. The front half of the box opens to reveal a turntable with both a listener head for playing records and a recorder head that created a playable record with an audio recording. A dictation microphone is attached to the player via a black cord. Serial PRWRCO.
Unlike other disc-based recording devices of the era, the Sound Scriber embossed the surface of a record rather than cutting into it. The embossed surface was playable with the Sound Scriber's listening head. Machines like these remained popular until the advent of cheap magnetic tape recording in the mid 1960s.
