Urban planner, theorist, and teacher known for his book "The Image of the City (1960). He was a proponent of the concept of "mental maps", which encourages planners to view places through the perspective of residents and users. He took early retirement from MIT in 1978 to allow him time to carry out more substantial practice with a firm he cofounded with Stephen Carr: Carr Lynch Associates. An anthology of Lynch's writings and professional work was published posthumously by the MIT Press.
