Bruno Pfister, Principal

Bruno Pfister is a Design Principal at the firm of Kallmann McKinnell and Wood Architects in Boston. He graduated in 1967, after a 6 year program, at the ETH, (Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich, Switzerland), with a Master Degree. After 1 year of practical experience, he relocated to Boston, MA. and pursued a dual career of practicing and teaching. In 1967 he joined the firm of Desmond & Lord and worked on the Southern Massachusetts Institute of Technology, designed by Paul Rudolph. In 1969 Mr. Pfister joined the firm of Kallmann McKinnell and Wood Architects to work on the Boston Five Cents Savings Bank in Boston and the Greenpoint Hospital in New York City. During this time he was an Instructor of Design at the Boston Architectural Center.

In 1971 Mr. Pfister and two colleagues won a large Urban Design Competition for the City of Karlsruhe, Germany. He returned in 1972 to Switzerland, practiced independently and collaborated with Dolf Schnebli, at the ETH in Zurich. In 1974 he was invited as a Visiting Critic at Washington University in St. Louis. In 1976, Mr. Pfister returned to the US and served 4-years as Assistant Professor on the faculty of Washington University, School of Architecture, St. Louis. In 1980 he was appointed as Head of the Undergraduate Program, School of Architecture, Syracuse University. In 1982, in collaboration with Kallmann McKinnell and Wood, he won a competition for the Business School at Washington University, St. Louis, and returned to Boston to join the firm of Kallmann McKinnell and Wood. He served as Senior Associate and was appointed Principal in 1986. From 1982 to 1989 he was an Associate Professor of Design and Technology at the Graduate School of Design, at Harvard University (GSD).

Since the 7 year appointment at the GSD, Mr. Pfister served as visiting critic at the University of Maryland, University of Texas in Arlington, Syracuse University, MIT, and Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston. He has been invited over the years at various institutions for lectures and critiques.
